Dr. Michael McDowell
Michael McDowell, Ed.D. is the Superintendent of the Ross School District. Most recently, he served as the Associate Superintendent of Instructional and Personnel Services at the Tamalpais Union High School District. During his tenure, the Tamalpais Union High School District was recognized by the Marzano Research Laboratories as one of the top highly reliable organizations in the United States, and schools within the district received recognitions by the US News and World Report, and honored with California Distinguished Schools accolades.
Prior to his role as a central office administrator, Dr. McDowell served as the Principal of North Tahoe High School, a California Distinguished School. Prior to administration, Dr. McDowell was a leadership and instructional coach for the New Tech Network supporting educators in designing, implementing, and enhancing innovative schools across the country. Before engaging in the nonprofit sector, Dr. McDowell created and implemented an environmental science and biology program at Napa New Technology High School, infusing 1:1 technology, innovative teaching and assessment, and leveraging student voice in the classroom. Additionally, Dr. McDowell, taught middle school math and science in Pacifica, CA.
Dr. McDowell is a national presenter, speaking on instruction, learning, leadership and innovation. He has provided professional development services to large school districts, State Departments of Education, and higher education. In addition, he was a former National Faculty member for the Buck Institute of Education and a key thought leader in the inception of their leadership work in scaling innovation in instructional methodologies. His expertise in design and implementation is complimented by his scholarly approach to leadership, learning, and instruction.
He holds a B.S. in Environmental Science and a M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Redlands and an Ed.D. from the University of La Verne. He received departmental honors for his work in Environmental Science and was awarded the Tom Fine Creative Leadership Award for his doctoral work at the University of La Verne. He has also completed certification programs through Harvard University, the California Association of School Business Officials, the American Association of School Personnel Administrators, and Cognition Education. He holds both a California single subject teaching credential and an administrative credential.
Marisol Quevedo Rerucha
Marisol Quevedo Rerucha serves as the Chief of Strategy and Partnerships for the National Parents Union. She is a proven leader who doesn’t just talk about healing, equity, social justice, and disrupting generational trauma; she has both lived experience and a proven record of doing this work while leading change in education and non-profit systems. As a former teacher, principal, and district leader she uses her voice to challenge systems of oppression and more importantly amplifies the voices of others.
The impact of her passion, experience, work, and voice is felt beyond her own community as she serves in the following ways as: Chair of UnidosUS National Institute for Latino School Leaders alumni council; Board Member of Youth Empowerments Finest; Board Member and Treasure for Gente Unida; and as a partner with organizations (nonprofit and for profit business) to provide comprehensive strategic Thereaction planning. Her book, Beyond the Surface of Restorative Practices: Building an Organizational Culture of Equity, Connection and Healing, was released March of 2021.
Dr. Paul Bloomberg
Dr. Paul Bloomberg is the founder and Chief Learning Officer of The Core Collaborative (TCC), a professional learning network that specializes in learner-centered approaches to learning. The Core Collaborative supports over 2000 schools globally with a mission of expanding student ownership and agency. Paul is the co-author of the best-selling book and professional learning pathway, Leading Impact Teams: Building a Culture of Efficacy published by Corwin Press and is the lead author of, Peer Power! Unite, Learn and Prosper: Activate an Assessment Revolution, published by Mimi & Todd Press.
Prior to founding The Core Collaborative, Paul was the former director of TIDES (Transformative Inquiry Design for Effective Schools & Systems), a nonprofit in San Diego focusing on problem-project based learning. Prior to TIDES, Paul served as the principal of a high poverty elementary school in San Diego County. His team beat the odds by significantly turning around achievement over a three year timeframe through an intense focus on formative assessment and goal setting. Since that time, Paul has used his expertise to support multiple, successful school turn-around and school innovation efforts. Paul has also served as a Distinguished Professional Development Associate for the Leadership & Learning Center, founded by Douglas Reeves and has served as a Visible Learning Consultant for Professor John Hattie.
Paul is grateful to educators globally who have worked on the front lines during the pandemic of 2020; they are true heroes. With this tremendous respect, TCC assembled over 100 principals, teachers, parents and students to discuss the problems of practice they were encountering daily and weekly with hybrid and remote teaching. Starting in April 2020, in partnership with pilot schools, TCC began their “remote teaching” design and piloting process. The Clarity for Virtual Teaching and Learning Framework was released in May of 2020 and TCC began supporting schools immediately. Over the summer it became clear that the planning and execution of engaging, evidence-based, high impact, remote instruction took more time than teacher teams had. This challenge was met with collective action. TCC began collaborating with teacher leaders and formative assessment experts on the creation of The EmpowerED Learner eToolkit that will be released in January 2021 for grades 3-8. The toolkit integrates G-Suite and Pear Deck through transferable, formative tasks that can be easily customized to support a high level of differentiation while expanding student ownership and agency through classroom clarity, self-assessment, feedback and goal setting.
Paul’s passion is partnering with systems to build a culture of efficacy by strengthening teacher and student agency in developing assessment capable, emotionally capable and socially capable learners. He is deeply committed to enhancing learner success and believes that we all share the responsibility for social justice, equity and inclusion. Paul resides in Palm Springs, California with his husband Tony. They have two sons, Alex and Taylor, who live in California.
